What Makes A Community Great?

                                                                           What Makes A Community Great?

What is your definition of a great community? I imagine there are as many answers to this question as there are people. For some a community may be defined as the place you grew up, for many it is simply the community in which you live and raise your families. For others it might be all of the above.

Whatever your definition is, I believe we all deserve to live in a community that offers its youth growth, its adults hope, and dignity for its elders. The challenge is how do we get there? How do we build a community that offers growth, hope and dignity for its citizens?

I believe the answer starts with our youth. It’s been told to us countless times that “children and youth are the foundation of our future” but nowhere in our community do we see social delivery models that provide platforms for youth to share with us their opinions and ideas.

If we want a community that truly provides for its citizens today and in the future, we need to reach out and engage our youth, to advocate their involvement in decision making. By providing a level or form of participatory democracy for our youth, we not only provide them with a degree of ownership, we help build responsible citizens.

I believe the best way to achieve these goals is to create programs that promote education, participation, and ultimately, opportunity. As a community, it’s our job to create and support the most innovative and effective social delivery programs that works best for OUR community.

PACT’s One Village Care Initiative wants to start the process of building a great community, and we can’t do it without your help. This effort requires the spirit and heart of all stakeholders, working together to forge a partnership of hope.

Let’s begin this process together, let’s start talking. I look forward to the discussion.

Sincerely;

As quoted by Anthony Kalamut; Creative Advertising coordinator for Seneca College "If it is to be, it is up to me". People need to realize that they are in control of their own destiny. If they want to make something happen it's important to not delay but take immediate action. To me the first step is changing your attitude. In the world today people put up so many barriers to protect themselves from being harmed both physically and emotionally. Many perceive the person next to them on the subway, in the supermarket, or at the gas pumps to name a few as a stranger and therefore potential danger or threat. People need to stop viewing the unknown around them as strangers but more so neighbours of this community we call Earth. To consciously make more of an effort to smile, hold the door, and generally act more neighbourly to one another, we can start tearing down these walls and start building a more welcoming and accepting community.

What makes a community great is when people who are all different, put aside their differences and strive to make the community a better place. By doing simple things like lending a hand, or making someone feel better is a great start in making our planet, our world, our country and our community a better place!

A self sufficient community where people would not need to import much or even

export much is a meaning of a good community to me.  From time to time we need

the experties of others and would need to lend our experties to other communites.

Margaret Mead said “its small groups of committed people who

Change the world indeed it is the only thing that ever has “

all great movements start organically, and with the support
of the Etobicoke community the power of one becomes the
power of many.

Great work Justin
